Etsy fees explained
Etsy takes money in three places on almost every sale, and in a fourth when an order comes from its advertising. This guide walks through each one, shows what a real order costs, and explains why small items feel the fees most.
The fees at a glance
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 | Each listing, when you publish it and each time it renews |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item price plus shipping |
| Payment processing (US) | 3% + $0.25 | Order total |
| Payment processing (UK) | 4% + £0.20 | Order total |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | Orders where your listing currency differs from your bank account currency |
| Offsite Ads | 15% (12% for shops above $10,000 yearly sales) | Order total, only when the sale came through those ads |
Processing rates depend on the country of your bank account, so the calculator has presets for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the euro area and Australia, and a custom option for everywhere else. Some countries also add a small regulatory fee, which has its own field.
Listings renew, and each renewal costs $0.20
A listing expires after four months. Etsy renews it automatically and charges another $0.20. When you sell one unit of a multi-quantity listing, the listing renews at the same price. A shop with many slow sellers pays this fee again and again, which is why the calculator lets you set the listing fee per sale. Etsy Plus, at $10 a month, includes 15 listing credits, worth $3.
A $100 sale
With no shipping charge and no ads, a $100 sale from a US seller costs $9.95 in fees: $0.20 listing, $6.50 transaction and $3.25 processing. You receive $90.05 before your product and shipping costs.
Shipping counts toward the fees
The transaction and processing fees apply to the order total including shipping. Take a $35 item with $5 shipping. The order total is $40, and fees are $4.25. If you hide the $5 in the item price instead, the fees on a $40 item are identical. Charging shipping separately does not avoid fees, so price the whole package.
Why cheap items hurt
The fixed amounts, $0.20 for the listing and $0.25 for processing, are the same on every order. On a $10 item, fees are $1.40, which is 14% of the sale. On a $100 item the share falls under 10%. If you sell low-priced goods, bundling items or setting a minimum order value protects your margin.
Offsite Ads
When a buyer clicks one of Etsy's ads on another site and buys within the tracking window, Etsy charges 15% of the order total, or 12% once your shop passes $10,000 in yearly sales. On the $40 order above, that is $6.00 on top of the usual fees, bringing the total to $10.25. Shops under the threshold can opt out, while larger shops generally cannot, so decide whether to build the fee into your prices and run the numbers with the Offsite Ads box ticked.
Practical tips
- Price from the order total, not the item price. Shipping is charged the same percentages.
- Set the processing region to your bank country. The fixed amount differs in each currency.
- Test your best sellers with and without Offsite Ads to see the worst-case profit.
- Check Etsy's own fee page before changing prices. Rates change, and the calculator lets you edit every one.
Run your own numbers in the calculator. Pick Payout after fees to see what you receive, or Full profit to include product cost and shipping.
