Amazon seller fees explained
Amazon's fee stack has more layers than Etsy or eBay. Some are fixed, some depend on price, and some depend on the size and weight of your product. This guide separates them so you can see which ones apply to you.
1. The selling plan
- Individual: $0.99 for every item sold, no monthly fee. Suits sellers who sell fewer than about 40 items a month.
- Professional: $39.99 a month, no per-item fee. The calculator spreads it across your monthly orders.
2. The referral fee
Amazon's commission is a percentage of the total price, which includes shipping charged to the buyer. Most categories pay 15%. Consumer electronics, computers and cameras pay 8%. Beauty, health and baby products pay 8% on items up to $10 and 15% above. Clothing uses three price bands. Furniture and jewelry charge a lower rate on the part of the price above a threshold. Amazon applies a minimum referral fee of $0.30 per item and left its referral percentages unchanged for 2025 and 2026.
Media categories such as books also charge a fixed closing fee of $1.80. Pick your category in the calculator, or use the custom rate option for one that is not listed.
3. FBA fulfillment
If Amazon stores, packs and ships for you, it charges a per-unit fulfillment fee based on size tier and weight. Two recent changes matter:
- On January 15, 2026, fulfillment fees rose by an average of $0.08 per unit. Small items priced between $10 and $50 saw an increase of about $0.25.
- On April 17, 2026, Amazon added a 3.5% fuel surcharge on top of every fulfillment fee in the US and Canada.
Because the fee depends on your exact product, the calculator asks you to enter the figure from Amazon's own revenue calculator in Seller Central. Add storage, which is billed monthly by volume, as a per-unit amount.
4. Fees that arrive later
- Refunds. When you refund a buyer, Amazon returns the referral fee minus an administration fee of $5 or 20% of the referral fee, whichever is less. You also lose the FBA fulfillment fee.
- Advertising. Sponsored Products cost depends on your bids. Enter your average cost per sale.
- Inbound and removal fees. Costs of sending stock to Amazon or taking it back. Add them to "other costs" in Full profit mode.
Example: a $25 item in Home & Kitchen
Take a $25 item, a 15% referral fee, an FBA fulfillment fee of $3.80 and the Professional plan at 100 orders a month. The referral fee is $3.75, fulfillment is $3.80, the fuel surcharge is $0.13, and the plan costs $0.40 per order. Total fees are $8.08, leaving $16.92 before your product cost and the cost of getting stock to Amazon. That is 32% of the sale gone to Amazon.
FBA or FBM?
Selling it yourself (FBM) removes fulfillment and storage fees, but you pay the postage and handle returns. FBA wins for compact, fast-moving items that qualify for Prime. FBM often wins for large, heavy or slow items where fulfillment fees are high. Compare both on the calculator's Compare tab using your real numbers.
Run your own numbers in the calculator. Pick Payout after fees to see what you receive, or Full profit to include product cost and shipping.
