eBay seller fees explained
eBay's pricing looks simple: a percentage of the sale plus a small fixed fee. The detail that surprises sellers is what the percentage is applied to. This guide covers the main fees, the categories that differ, and examples you can check against your own statements.
The main fees
| Fee | Most categories | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Final value fee | 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the amount above | Charged on the total sale amount |
| Final value fee with a Store (Basic or higher) | 12.7% up to $2,500, then 2.35% above | Store subscription fees are separate |
| Per-order fee | $0.30 on orders of $10 or less, $0.40 above | Once per order, not per item |
| Insertion fee | About $0.35 per listing beyond your free allowance | Individual sellers get a monthly allowance of free listings |
| Promoted Listings | The ad rate you choose | Charged on top of the final value fee when the ad leads to a sale |
Some third-party pages still show 13.25%, which was a rate from earlier schedules. eBay's own fee page and your monthly invoice are the final word, and every rate in the calculator can be edited.
What the percentage applies to
The final value fee covers the item price, the shipping the buyer pays and the sales tax eBay collects. A $100 item with $8 shipping is a $108 sale. The fee is 13.6% of $108, which is $14.69, plus the $0.40 order fee, for $15.09 in total.
The tax portion matters more than most sellers expect. On a $150 order that includes $12 of sales tax, the fee is still calculated on $150. That is $20.80, so you receive $117.20. The $12 of tax goes to the authorities, and eBay takes its percentage of it anyway. In the calculator, enter the tax in the box under the order total.
Categories that differ
- Athletic shoes. Orders of $150 or more are charged 8% with no per-order fee. A $150 pair costs $12.00 in fees. Below $150 the usual 13.6% applies.
- Watches, parts and accessories. A tiered fee: 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from there to $7,500, and 3% above.
- Other categories. Musical instruments, some collectibles and vehicle parts have their own rates. Use the custom rate option for anything else.
Lowering your fees
- Store subscription. Dropping from 13.6% to 12.7% saves $9 on every $1,000 of sales. Compare that with the monthly subscription cost.
- Top Rated Seller. Qualifying sellers receive a 10% discount on the final value fee.
- Bundle orders. Two $50 orders pay $0.80 in order fees. One $100 order pays $0.40.
- Keep your account standing. eBay adds a surcharge to the final value fee for accounts rated Below Standard.
Low-priced items
An $8 item pays $0.30 plus 13.6%, or $1.39. That is nearly 17% of the sale. If your average order is small, the per-order fee is a bigger lever than the percentage, so lots and bundles help.
Run your own numbers in the calculator. Pick Payout after fees to see what you receive, or Full profit to include product cost and shipping.
